Data on how many students appeared for JEE Main 2023

Is it true that over a million students compete with you?
The statement that “it is a very competitive exam” is probably something you have heard many JEE applicants saying. Out of 10-12 lakhs only a small portion is selected. IITs admit only around 10,000 students every year. Are you really against those 10-12 lakh students, that’s the real question?
— Put simply, the answer is no. Let’s see why.
A large number of students from across the country appear for the JEE Main examination; The preparation level of these students ranges from average to less prepared. Most of the underprepared students—more than 50% of them—are 12th grade students who are focusing on their board exams and other entrance exams.
Of the remaining 4-5 lakh students, most are prepared, but not up to the required level; On the other hand, the remaining 1-2 lakh students are best prepared with the sole objective of qualifying JEE. As a result, the group of 1-2 lakh students is most competitive, not the group of 10-12 lakh; If you are well prepared and want to qualify JEE Main exam, then you fall in the “1 lakh” category.

What is the method of calculating JEE Main exam score and rank?
The process of calculating the JEE main exam marks and rank involves normalization and percentage calculation based on the marks obtained by the candidate in the exam here is how it usually works.
- Scoring: Since JEE Main is conducted in multiple variations and sessions, the original scores of the candidates are normalized to account for variations in the number of marks at different times of the examination The scoring system ensures that there is no leader in jeopardy for attending a more difficult meeting.
- Raw Score Calculation: The raw score is calculated based on the number of answers identified by the candidate. A fixed number of points are awarded for each correct answer, while incorrect answers have a negative point system.
- Normalization Process: The normalization process involves equalizing the difficulty levels of different groups of questionnaires. This policy changes the scores so that candidates from different sessions are in the same position.
- Percentage score: After normalization, a percentage score is calculated for each candidate. The percentage shows the percentage of candidates who scored equal or lower than a particular candidate. A higher percentage score than those taking other tests indicates better performance.
- Ranking: The All India Rank (AIR) for each candidate is determined on the basis of percentage marks. They wind up using admissions process and counseling. Candidates who get higher percentage get better positions.
- Tie-breaking criteria: In case of candidates obtaining equal percentage of marks, tie-breaking criteria such as marks in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, age etc. are considered to determine the final ranking.
By following this extensive process of normalization, percentage calculation, ranking and tie-breaking, the scores and ranks of the JEE Main exam are determined fairly and accurately, reflecting the performance of each candidate relative to others.
